The Urdd Branch at Ysgol Glan y Môr
Pupils can join the Urdd every year by paying the annual membership fee.
Sports
Urdd members in the school get the opportunity to compete in the Swimming Gala
and in Gymnastics competitions. The school has been successful on many occasions.
The Eisteddfod
The Urdd members compete annually in many competitions in the Regional and
County eisteddfodau and the pupils have been fortunate enough to represent the
School and the County in the National Eisteddfod on numerous occasions. Pupils can
compete as individuals if they wish in disco dancing, recitation, acting, singing, folk
singing and cerdd dant competitions, or show their instrumental talents. The school
also competes in group competitions such as the group recitation, dialogue, disco
dancing, cerdd dant choir, girls singing group, boys singing group and the folk
dancing group. Pupils are also encouraged to compete in the Eisteddfod homework
section and they have been very successful in the literary competitions in the past.
They have an opportunity to write poetry and other literary forms and complete
project work or design a magazine for young people to name but a few.
Trips
The pupils are invited to join the Urdd trips to EuroDisney and the Urdd residential
centres. Children from years 7-9 usually go to Glan Llyn residential centre on a
Turkey and Trimmings weekend in December and visit for longer periods in the
summer to enjoy the various outdoor activities that the centre has to offer. The pupils
obviously benefit from socialising through the medium of Welsh with other pupils
from all parts of Wales. Pupils from years 10 and 11 get an opportunity to practise
their leadership skills by attending training courses for group leaders at Glan Llyn in
October and February. This is a good experience for them especially if they want to
work in the Outdoor Activities field in the future or with children and young people.
