Year 9 Options
For the first time, in year 10, pupils will have a degree of choice in the curriculum that they go on to study. Deciding between subjects at the end of year 9 is a natural but important step towards formulating a future career pattern.

Everyone must continue to study Welsh, English, Mathematics and Science. All pupils will also follow what is known as the core learning programme which includes Personal Education, Religious Studies, Citizenship and Careers. This is part of the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification. They will also have a Physical Education lesson.

In addition, they will have to choose THREE other subjects to study.

The optional subjects are presented in three groups, and pupils will have to choose ONE from each group. The choice of subjects is very important- the wrong selection could jeopardise future career plans. There is much to be said for maintaining a balance in the types of subjects chosen.

In order to help with the process of choosing the right options we will be using the Careers Wales website ( www.careerswales.com ) which gives advice on making the correct option choices as well as up to date information about jobs and career options. It also lists the jobs relevant to a chosen subject as well as suggesting career routes based on personal skills and qualifications

Year 9 pupils will be given their user names and passwords in order to login to the website in January
They will have an opportunity to explore and research into the different subjects and work skills required for different career paths and to make their option choices online. There will be a general presentation for pupils and parents in February to discuss the World of Work, Options and the BAC. The college will also hold taster courses for pupils interested in college courses. Choices must be made by Easter and a Parents Evening will be held to discuss these with the teachers and college staff.

The English Department

We are a well established department consisting of five members of staff working together to offer a wide range of experiences for the pupils of Ysgol Glan Y Môr. As well as providing lessons that deliver the needs of the curriculum we also aim to provide pupils with a rounded experience of school life through a range of extra- curricular activities. We share in the running of reading and writing clubs and arrange trips and workshops that develop pupils’ interests in the subjects.

The key aim of our department is to develop essential skills whilst encouraging enjoyment and participation for all pupils at all levels.

The Health and Social Care Department

Staff: Miss Heidi Littler.

The Course: The pupils follow a WJEC GCSE Course .

Career
The course is appropriate for those who are considering a career working with children, in nurseries or in nursery, primary and secondary schools. It is a suitable preparation for a career working with the elderly and with vulnerable adults or those with learning difficulties. Nursing, social work and occupational therapy are also careers that many of the pupils who study the course consider. The pupils are encouraged to choose to spend their year 10 work experience week in these fields. During the two years pupils have an opportunity to discuss various issues with workers from the Care sector who visit the school. We have a good relationship with Careers Wales and we had an opportunity to visit Antur Waunfawr to see their work. We arrange for pupils to have a Career Interview and therefore the experience of applying for a job and receiving feedback on their application forms and their performance in an interview. This of course is of great benefit to them when they are preparing themselves for the World of Work

Music
The Head of the Music Department is Mr Iwan Wyn Williams, but many peripatetic teachers support the department by visiting the school to offer instrumental lessons to individuals under the William Mathias schools instrumental scheme:

· Mrs C. Alwena Roberts – Harp and Singing
· Mr Ray Forrest – Drums and Guitar
· Mr Urien Huws – Brass
· Ms Elin Roberts – Woodwind

The young instrumentalists are encouraged to join the Area Orchestra and some manage to reach the standard required to participate in the County Instrumental Groups.

The extracurricular activities are an important part of the school calendar and there are opportunities to sing or play instruments on special occasions. The school competes in the Urdd Eisteddfod, and in May 2019 under 15 and 19 singing parties competed at the Eisteddfod yr Urdd in Cardiff, Individuals and choirs have had the opportunity to take part in local concerts and regularly entertain a group of friends of the school who come for afternoon tea which has been arranged by the student who follow catering qualification.

The Department also organises an annual Christmas Concert that is held in a local chapel or church and cooperates with the Welsh Department to arrange the school eisteddfod.

Religious Education
logo
Religious Education is offered as a subject to all school pupils during key stage 3. The curriculum is based on the Count Syllabus which corresponds to the National Framework for the subject. The content is open to all pupils of all backgrounds and ability and gives attention to the six main religions of the world. Naturally appropriate attention is given to Christianity in order to reflect the nature of Wales and the local community. The department receives visitors, goes on occasional visits and arranges special services (e.g. Christmas and St. David’s Day) and makes an annual effort to raise money for Christian Aid. Among the themes in years 7-9 are Belonging, Commitment, Suffering and Religion in the 21st century.

A GCSE course is offered to KS4 pupils. The department has chosen Option B offered by the Welsh Joint Education Committee. This is a thematic course on subjects such as Our World, Religion and Conflict and Religion and Medicine. These themes are studied mainly from a Christian and Islamic perspective. GCSE results have been constantly good over the years and it is now possible to sit the first half of the course at the end of year 10. A visit is made to a synagogue, mosque or cathedral during the GCSE course. The department also contributes to PSE provision during KS4.
